Frequently Asked Questions
What is WEED-X® Landscape Fabric?
A dual layer fabric used to control weeds in landscape beds or gardens.
What kind of mulch should I use?
There is no single all purpose mulch that works best in all situations. Pick a mulch based on your climate zone and what benefit you wish to gain. Many people use bark chips. If you use larger chips, it is easier for water and nutrients to reach your plants. If you use shredded bark, it can deteriorate more quickly and allow some weed seeds to germinate in the top mulch layer. Pine straw is a good mulch choice for plants that enjoy more acidic soil such as azaleas, blueberries, roses and hydrangeas. Do NOT use topsoil to cover the fabric since that will promote weed growth.
How much mulch should I use?
You only need enough mulch to cover the fabric, usually a 1”-2” layer. A thin layer means less weed problems since they cannot establish themselves in a shallow depth.
How do I hold the fabric in place?
An easy way to hold down the fabric is to use garden staples. Use a staple every 2 to 3 feet and where the fabric overlaps. Also, use around openings that were cut for plants and shrubs. The fabric will stay down from the weight of the mulch, but over time, it may lift up or shift, leaving uncovered sections.
Can I use fabric on slopes without the mulch sliding off?
Gentle slopes with less than a 15 degree grade should be fine.
Can I use fabric with perennial flowers?
Yes, but you will need to leave a larger opening in the fabric if you want your plants to spread and multiply.
